JELD-WEN was founded in 1960 as a small Oregon millwork plant with 15 employees. Founder and shareholder, Dick Wendt, wanted a name without conventions such as a city name or a specific product reference, because he didn’t want to limit the companies potential for growth. Drawing from a treasured childhood memory, Wendt recalled that his father had bought a small Iowa farm in the early 1930s so that the entire Wendt family would have a productive relaxing place to live during the Depression. When the family held a contest to name the farm, the winning entry was JELD-WEN Acres. It was an acronym for the names of Wendt’s immediate family. “J” is for Jewel, Wendt’s sister; “E” is for Evelyn, his mother; “L” is for Lester; and finally “D” for Dick.
