Natural Resources Canada will be implementing new criteria for its ENERGY STAR windows and doors category on October 1st, 2010. These new higher performance levels for windows and doors have been put in place by NRCan and are a result of efforts  to keep ENERGY STAR qualified products in the top 25% of all products available on the market today, from an energy efficiency standpoint. Over the last few years, provincial governments across Canada have raised the minimum energy requirements for windows and doors within their energy codes. For all intents and purposes, the performance level of ENERGY STAR qualified products was being required by many provincial regulations. It became time for NRCan to increase the minimum requirements for ENERGY STAR if it was to maintain its objective of representing the top 25% in energy efficient products.
