Casement and Awning windows actually have quite a bit in common, and it can be hard to really notice the difference between the two. Both of these popular window styles are rectangular in shape and operate swiftly with a crank handle. So, how can you exactly tell which is which?
Awning windows are horizontally oriented windows that are hinged along the top, while Casement Windows are vertically oriented and hinged along the left or right-hand side of the frame.
Casement Windows are hinged on the side and swing outwards like a door. These easy-to-operate windows offer the tightest seal of all operating units, come equipped with a crank handle, and open a full 90° allowing for maximum ventilation. Awning Windows are hinged along the top and swing outwards. These windows allow for air movement in just about any weather, come equipped with a crank handle, and are ideal for smaller spaces such as a kitchen sink or over a crowded counter. Combining Awning Windows with adjacent fixed windows make for a clean, modern look.
