Spring is the time for renovation projects and replacing windows and doors. Like all large-scale projects, the winning strategy for the best results is to take things seriously and plan well-ahead.

We asked the advice of an expert in renovation work, Mr. Louis Lachappelle, BAA, from Avantage-Plus Inc. He shared his tips on the essential elements that need to be taken into account before jumping into a project.

1. Plans and Estimates
The first item to consider: develop a detailed plan that matches the renovations to be performed. Don’t leave anything to chance. The plan should be performed by a professional who can anticipate and plan for any potential surprises (where possible). The next step is obtaining precise estimates – get them in writing. Don’t skimp on the specifications of materials: being specific is important, especially during the preliminary stage, because this is the foundation of your project.
2. Create A Realistic and Detailed Production Schedule
Now that you have your plans and estimates in hand, it is time to assemble the information and create a production schedule. This schedule should take into account even the smallest details (within reason). What is the best advice? Validate each deadline, because even the smallest setback can have an effect on the progression of your project. Don’t hesitate to ask for help if you need it.
3. Choose Your Contractor Carefully
Choosing a skilled contractor is an important step. Make your choice based on their previous experience and how it relates to the work that has to be done. Can the contractor master all aspects of the plan? Will they be able to conduct a quality follow-up for each step? Are they ready to commit to the production schedule in order to respect the deadlines? All of this information should be validated before handing the work over to the contractor. 4. Get the Required Permits
This step is often relegated to the last minute when the renovation and construction work is just about to begin. From a legal standpoint, all types of renovation work require construction permits. While this is an important formality, take the time necessary make sure everything is in order.
5. Plan for the impact of renovation work
Don’t forget to consider the impact that renovation work will have on your daily life. Where will you live while the work is being performed? Where will you put the furniture? If you decide to stay at home during the work, how will you meet the basic needs of your family if some facilities become compromised during the project? If the renovation work is being conducted at a business, how will you minimize the inconvenience of renovations to your clientele? Will you be closing your business for a while? The time you invest in planning for this huge detail is an investment in your future peace of mind and your quality of life.
